Decoding Sunscreens

So what does "SPF" and "PA" means on sunscreen?

SPF: Protection against UV-B rays. Increases the time before skin starts burning.
  • SPF 1 protects skin against UV-B rays for 15-20 minutes

PA: Protection against UV-A rays. Increases the time before skin starts darkening.
  • PA+ can increase the time before skin starts darkening by 2-4 times.
  • PA++ increases the time by 4-8 times.
  • PA+++ is the maximum protection and can increase the time by more than 8 times.

For people who are indoors most of the time, you can choose sunscreen products with lower SPF index, e.g. SPF 30 with PA +++, which gives you enough protection without taxing your skin.

For people who are outdoors most of the time, you can choose sunscreen products with higher SPF index, e.g. SPF 50 with PA +++, which is sweat and water resistant to give maximum protection.

Below are example of some sunscreens which are available in Singapore.

From left to right (1. Shu Uemura UV Armor SPF 30 PA +++, 2. Shiseido Aqua Label SPF 50 PA+++, 3. Olay White Radiance SPF 50 PA+++, 4. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 50 PA+++, 5. Laneige Brightening Sun Powder SPF 50 PA+++)

Shu Uemura UV Armor has a light formula and is best for people who are mostly indoors and prefer non-greasy feel. Shiseido Aqualabel tends to be on the oiler side, but this can be overcome by dusting some powder (E.g. Laneige Brightening Sun Powder) to absorb the excess oil. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer is best suited for people doing outdoor activities as it is ultra light and waterproof.

    General guidelines to sunscreen application
  • Clean the skin before application.
  • Apply as the last step of skincare.
  • Apply to cool, dry skin twenty to thirty minutes before sun exposure. Cool, dry skin allows sunscreen to bind effectively. When sunscreen is applied to warm skin, the open pores can become irritated easily and rashes can develop.
  • Apply 1 teaspoon to face, 2 tablespoon to body.
  • Two applications help cover any missed spots.
  • Reapply during the day.
  • At the end of the day, remove sunscreen with makeup remover.

    Sleek i-Divine Palettes

After learning of this brand called Sleek  some years ago, I have been trying to get my hands on their wonderful well pigmented, vivid colored and cheap eye palettes. Thanks to Luxola , I am able to enjoy products from Sleek without having to go through all the hassle of shipping it from UK. I first started out my collection with the Au Naturel palette, after which I went on to buy the Oh So Special from some blog sale. Just within a year, my Sleek eye palette collection grew and so I would like to share some swatches and thoughts of the palettes. The Body Shop Camomile Makeup Remover

The Body Shop has just launched a new series of makeup removers, comprising of two eye makeup remover, oil, butter and muslin cloth. All the products are made with Community Fair Trade Camomile Oil. Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter, Muslin Cloth, Waterproof Eye and Lip Make-up Remover Out of the five new products, I bought three to try, namely the Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter, Muslin Cloth and Waterproof Eye & Lip Make-up Remover. Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter The Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter comes in a metal tin which screws on/off. In the tin, it looks like a hard block of white butter. Germ phobes will definitely complain that this is the most unhygienic way of storage, and to overcome this problem, just use a spatula to scoop the butter up for use. My thoughts on the cleansing butter: I really love this cleansing butter! It smells super nice with a flowery scent, does not contain any mineral oil (ahem... I'm looking at you Faceshop &
