Spending too much time under the sun not only causes tanning and spot formation, but also speeds up aging of your skin! So beach babes, beware! Here's why sun rays are bad for you:
There are 3 different types of harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation that reaches us from the sun. The sun's (UV) light falls into three wavelength bands: UVA, UVB & UVC.
UVA Rays:
Have the longest wavelength and remain high in intensity all day. Present even on a cloudy day or indoors as it can penetrate clouds and window panes Penetrate through the epidermis & continue into the dermis. Breaks down the organization of skin cells. Responsible for skin aging, collagen loss, broken blood vessels, wrinkles and spots formation.
UVB Rays:
Have mid range wavelength and is highest in intensity from 10am to 2pm near the equator. Blocked off by glass. Penetrate through the epidermis & deep into the dermis damaging newer cells. Responsible for skin burns, sensitivity reactions (skin becomes red and tingly) and cancer.
UVC Rays:
Shortest wavelength & usually absorbed by ozone layer.
When skin suffers UV damage, it naturally produces melanin, Melanin moves upwards to skin surface, causing the skin to darken. Normally, the skin darkening will disappear once darkened epidermis cells are shed during regular skin turnover. However, if UV damage has been severe, skin turnover becomes irregular and causes dark pigments to remain.
Hence, always make sunscreen a daily habit - skipping it is hampering your whitening efforts. Do follow the next post to see how to choose sunscreen suitable for your skin type.
